Literacy Initiative

School Principals of the South Slave region, representing their schools,
initiated discussion in the winter of 2000, identifying literacy as the
region’s number one program priority. The South Slave Divisional Education
Council endorsed the focus and implemented a literacy project in collaboration
with students, educators, community members/agencies, District Education
Authorities, and the Divisional Education Council. A regional working committee,
lead by a regional Coordinator and made up of one representative from each
school in the South Slave, developed and continues to update and implement
plan, strategies and actions that are… most likely to bring about
the greatest improvements to student literacy across the region.
The Literacy Committee defines literacy as the ability to read, listen,
represent, write, view and speak. The committee also believes that literacy…
o provides access to information
o is the basis for all communication
o instills confidence
o maximizes personal and career opportunities
o is the foundation for lifelong learning
o is the basis for building relationships
o development must be student centered with not only parents and
teachers taking responsibility, but the entire community
