Language and Culture

One of the features of our Language and Culture program is to integrate Dene values in our Effective Behavioural support Program (EBS), to integrate language and culture activities the other subjects in the curriculum, to make use of the beautiful land around Lutsel K’e as a ‘giant classroom’ for the students to learn about the land and animals, ecology and habitat, plants and medicines, and learn traditional skills in an authentic context.

Ms Debra Bridgman’s Grade 4,5,6 class recently hiked to the top of the hill to collect specimens, take photographs and look at the many fall plants. Below left: Zachary Sangris took this picture of an old can on top of a lichen covered rock. Ms. Bridgman entered this photo in the Canadian Geographic Photo Contest in September—hopefully he wins!!!

Students Courage and Levi look at newly hatched butterfly they found  under the slide in late September. About 11 students watched in wonder as it came out of its cocoon!

Right—Chase does his checklist on his walk.

Gr. 7,8,9 students work on putting the tipi up behind the school for working on hides, preparing dry meat and fish and hanging out and telling stories.

Every year we have elders in the school to teach students traditional skills. At left Mary Rose Enzoe is showing students how to cut caribou for dry meat. Miles is showing off their good work.
