This year we had two Grade 10 graduates: Bianca Lockhart and William Van Leeuwen—Congratulations!! This will be our last year of Gr. 10 Grad ceremony since we have added Gr. 11 and next year will have Gr. 12 at the school. Having K-12 right in the home community has been shown to be very successful in all the communities in the NWT from Rae-Edzo to Fort Resolution! We look forward to providing a high quality high school program to all students in the community who wish to complete High School Graduation requirements. |

March 26—April 7, 2009 about 60 students and community members and elders spent a beautiful week at Timber Bay on Artillery Lake. Each day offered a wide variety of activities for everyone to participate in including trapping and hunting, cleaning hides, sewing and beading, bannock making, dry meat making, and stories and outdoor fires. Ryan Brooks of The University of Calgary was there as well doing some research on ‘caribou anatomy’ . They welcomed students and community members to watch and help out with the dissection and everyone learned a lot!! Eileen Drybone demonstrated her Taxidermy skills preparing several wolf skins for sale. Students set traps with elders and learned how to prepare the skins for sale as part of the ‘Take a Kid Trapping Program’. |

This was a new approach to the CEP this year! Community members were invited to interact with staff and try hands on activities in each of the subject areas. At each station they were invited to give some feedback—what kinds of programs would they like to see? Would they be willing to support these programs by coming into the school and volunteering or instructing traditional skills? Everyone had a great afternoon and we had some excellent ideas from the community. Air Tindi generously donated a return ticket to Yellowknife as a Door Prize. We had our CEP on October 8th, 2009 this year and it was equally successful. The staff worked very hard to present interesting activities, we asked for community input on the location of the New Aurora College building that will start construction next summer – everyone was very excited about this new opportunity! Again Air Tindi generously donated two return tickets to Yellowknife for our Door Prize, we had some master Bingo cards donated by Recreation and a 50/50 draw prize of just over $100 really helped the school fundraising efforts. |
